Braids Galore.

I think we can all relate to having a very busy semester upon us, and we could all do with some easy hairstyles. The kind of hairstyles that save us time in the morning but still keep us looking flawless. A bad hair day can ruin even the cutest outfit and impact your confidence levels quite a significant amount. In this piece, we will be looking at trending braided hairstyles to help you slay during those troubling hair days. Braids are relatively easy don’t require much effort to maintain. If you try something current and fresh, or old and classic, you can always add your own twist and allow your personality to shine through. Here are some of my personal favourites:

Cornrows

You can never truly go wrong with cornrows. This first look is an example of the typical cornrow hairstyle, with some extra detailing. Incorporating funky details with cornrows is important if you want to incorporate your own individuality and stand out from the rest while still looking fabulous. I prefer keeping the detail simple and not too busy, rather adding different thicknesses to the actual braid. The great thing about cornrows is that it’s low maintenance which makes getting ready quick and easy. If you are daring and like experimenting you can try cornrows with a zig-zag parting or a side- sweep style. This look is for any hair type and length, as you can extend your locks with box braids.

Box Braids

One of the most popular trends must be box braids. These braids are very easy to style and your imagination can run wild. This beautiful, timeless look can be achieved in a variety of sizes, shapes, lengths and colors which truly allows you your own unique twist. What I love about this hairstyle is how effortlessly you can put it up in a bun, style it down or work it both ways. There are a lot of different styles you can play around with when you have box braids, and these are some of my personal favourites:

If you find it difficult to maintain longer braids, I suggest you try a bob haircut. Short braids look gorgeous on anyone and it’s great way to enjoy your playful new look. A more recent fashionable look is the asymmetrical bob. This is a way to express you creativity while still maintaining a classy look play. Another idea is the A-line bob cut. This style outlines your face with the braids starting shorter in the back and gradually becoming longer towards the chin area. To shy away from the norm and add more dynamic to your short bob, another alternative is the layered bob hairstyle.

Faux Locks

When the Faux Locks hairstyle started trending it took the world by storm. I don’t know about you sisters, but I’m in love with this trend. Growing out natural dreadlocks takes a lot of time and patience, as well as being a high maintenance task. However, Faux locs are pretty simple to get and give a more unrealistic view to natural dreadlocks. Many celebrities have tried this hairstyle such as Rihanna, Jhene Aiko, Meagan Good, Blac Chyna and Zendaya. I recommend buying the synthetic dreads as it is super light-weight and very flexible. As soon as you get your dreads you can put it in a bun! Another good option is to cut them locks short in a bob. You can never fail by pairing up your locks with different accessories, colors and maybe even doing a funky shaved side look for a baddie element. So if you feeling this faux loc trends, try it out this Spring.

For this section, I’m going to give you a few tips on how you can improve your braid game. Previously, I’ve touched on adding different details and trying out a variety of sizes with your braids, but now I want to dive deeper into the details. I have two words for you – ACCESSORIES and COLOUR! Don’t be afraid to play around with accessories. Adding hair jewelry to your locks will definitely make you look more boho-chic. Incorporating beads to the ends of your hair will have you looking like a Queen. Glam your hair up by adding simple, cheap rings to it, or maybe a goddess-like chained hair pieces. Another idea to try is synthetic miniature flower pieces to look blooming this Spring. If you have trouble finding any hair jewelry, try the local R5 store without spending a fortune.

I think we all can agree that any type of braid looks amazing, but do you know what makes them pop even more? COLOUR! Put any colours in your braids and you’ll look beautifully vibrant. Depending on your personal choice, you can choose from a subtle black or dark blue to more bright and noticeable colors. Literally, a bit of color makes any braid look that much better. You can even play around and match your hair color with your make-up. My personal favorite must be the Ombrè and rainbow coloured braids. It makes any hairstyle stand out and you’re definitely guaranteed to slay all day, every day!

Lastly, my Womxn of Solitude I just want to say that your hair is your crown. Nurture your crown and don’t be afraid to give love to your fellow sisters. It will definitely make someone else smile if you compliment their hair. I hope you all found this article helpful and please let us, your Soulitude sisters know what you think about it. Peace, Love and Slay all day, everyday.
